To Kill a Mockingbird focuses on Atticus Finch, a small-town lawyer in the fictitious Maycomb County, Alabama. During the height of the Great Depression, Atticus works for whatever people can offer, which sometimes includes vegetables. His two children, Scout and Jem, are young, curious kids that consistently stumble into trouble. In their free time away from school, they play, go on adventures, and act out made-up stories about their world. The subject of the stories has recently been the mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley, who seems to never leave his home. Though playing pretend has its fun, Atticus puts an end to the antics by asking them to practice empathy: look at someone else through their perspective before making judgements.

Atticus’ adage creeps into the scenes that follow as he defends a Black man, Tom Robinson, in the racially segregated South, who has been charged with raping a white woman. The court, usually an image of justice, collects a jury of 12 white men to stack the odds against Atticus and Tom. The court’s further injustice isolates people of color into the “colored balcony” far away from the action.

Against Atticus’ warnings, Scout and Jem sneak into the courthouse to see what all the fuss is about. Their curiosity lands them in the balcony to observe the trial. They see their father fight an uphill battle, but they quickly recognize the inequality so prevalent around them, recalling Atticus’ wise words. As the trial unfolds, they all start to realize what Atticus meant when he said, “It’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”
