**ANGELA LANSBURY** (*Voice of the Prologue Narrator*) enjoyed a career spanning almost 75 years in film, stage and television. Winner of five Tony Awards®, her Broadway credits include *Hotel Paradiso* (1957), *A Taste of Honey* (1960), *Anyone Can Whistle* (1964), *Mame* (1966, Tony Award®), *Dear World* (1968, Tony Award®), *Gypsy* (1974, Tony Award®), *Sweeney Todd* (1979, Tony Award®), *Deuce* (2007), *Blithe Spirit* (2009, Tony Award®), *A Little Night Music* (2010) and *The Best Man* (2012). She appeared in over 60 motion pictures including *Gaslight* (Academy Award Nomination), *National Velvet*, *The Harvey Girls*, *State of the Union*, *The Portrait of Dorian Gray* (Academy Award® Nomination), *Samson and Delilah*, *The Court Jester*, *The Long Hot Summer*, *The Manchurian Candidate* (Academy Award Nomination), *The World of Henry Orient* and *Death on the Nile*. In 1991 she was the voice of Mrs. Potts in Disney's animated feature, *Beauty and the Beast*. From 1984-1996 she made television history starring as Jessica Fletcher on "Murder, She Wrote," the longest-running detective drama series in TV history, winning four of her six Golden Globe Awards. In 2013 she was awarded an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement in Motion Pictures. She was named a Dame of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. Lansbury passed away peacefully on October 11, 2022, just five days shy of her 97th birthday.

# **Thomas Mapfumo and The Blacks Unlimited**

Hailed as “The Lion of Zimbabwe,” Thomas Mapfumo is a musical visionary, fearless social critic, and one of the greatest African bandleaders of the past century.

Dr. Thomas Mapfumo was born in 1945 in Marondera, a small town south of Rhodesia's capital, Salisbury (now Harare). He spent his early years living with his grandparents in the countryside, away from the growing tensions of the cities. He developed a passion for traditional music and instruments like ngoma, hosho, and mbira, learning from his musically inclined grandparents. 

At the age of ten, he moved to Mbare, a poor black township in Salisbury, with his parents. Mbare was a center of protest against the colonial regime at the time. Here, Mapfumo discovered the radio and fell in love with international music from various famous artists. 

In high school, Mapfumo joined his first band, the Zutu Brothers, where he imitated American and English musicians. Later, he formed the Hallelujah Chicken Run Band, delving into traditional folk music. He incorporated these influences into his Afrorock performances, singing in Shona and addressing political themes due to the ongoing war, creating the Chimurenga music genre. 

Chimurenga music was built on the struggle of black Rhodesians and the country’s traditional music. It was a sound that gave the natives an identity and a voice during a time when they didn’t seem to have a voice.

Mapfumo's career progressed as he worked with different bands like the Acid Band and the Blacks Unlimited. It was with the latter that he popularized Chimurenga music by refining his unique sound, blending mbira with pop and incorporating poignant lyrics about the struggles of black Rhodesians.

Rhodesia’s white minority government saw Mapfumo’s music as a threat and banned it from the state-controlled radio stations. His music was still heard, however, in discos and on radio broadcasts that originated in neighboring countries. In late 1977, with the escalation of the liberation war, security forces finally attempted to silence Mapfumo by imprisoning him for 90 days. Upon his release, he returned to writing and singing his Chimurenga songs, which had come to be identified with the fight for freedom.

After Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, Mapfumo's music continued to evolve. He gained international recognition and released notable albums in the late 1980s and 1990s. His songs tackled various societal issues, including alcoholism, AIDS, and domestic violence.

As the political climate shifted in Zimbabwe, Mapfumo's music became increasingly critical of the government. He faced censorship and threats, leading him to move his family to the USA in 2000 for safety. Despite his exile, he remained committed to creating and performing music that challenged the status quo.

In 2018, after 14 years, Mapfumo returned to Zimbabwe for a concert, citing positive political changes. However, he hasn't returned since 2019 due to concerns about the ruling regime. Throughout his career, Mapfumo has been a resilient voice, using his music to express social and political dissent.

2001: Received an Honorary Doctorate in music from Ohio University at Athens and won AFIM’s Best World Contemporary CD Award in March 2001 (“Chimurenga Explosion”).

2004: Award for first world music artist to go digital with a download-only release, “Rise Up,” later released in CD form by Peter Gabriel’s Real World label.”

2006: Featured in an interview with Phil Meadley of the Guardian in London, England.

2008: Interviewed with George Negus of the SBS Dateline in Australia.

2009: Interviewed with Jon Kertzer of the National Public Radio.

2012: Performed at Carnegie Hall in Manhattan, New York, and was featured in NPR’s Musicians Who Paid the Price Before Pussy Riot.

2015: Keynote speaker at Metro State University of Denver-Black World Month.

2018: Returned to Zimbabwe after 14 years of living in exile and won the World Music Award at Global Fest Awards.

2023: Chimurenga music, a term coined by Mapfumo, was added as a music category for the Grammy Awards.

**Jeremy Zuckerman**\
Jeremy Zuckerman is an Emmy Award-winning composer and musician whose diverse body of work includes music for film, television and dance, traditional Chinese music, sonic art, and concert music. Jeremy is best known for composing the music for the globally beloved Nickelodeon series *Avatar: the Last Airbender* and *The Legend of Korra*. His unique scores have earned numerous accolades including two Emmy Award wins and several nominations. Upon the 2013 release of *The Legend of Korra* soundtrack (via the Sony Legacy label) it immediately hit #1 on Amazon Music, and quickly landed in the top 10 on both the iTunes and the Billboard soundtrack charts. In 2023 Republic Records: Kids & Family and Nickelodeon released the long-awaited “Avatar: The Last Airbender – Book 1: Water (Music from the Animated Series)” score on digital and vinyl. The album features an updated and re-recorded score from the first season of the iconic series. Outside of his work with Nickelodeon, Zuckerman has written a series of chamber pieces for the Echo Society, of which he is a founding member. Jeremy has also worked with the modern dance choreographer Benjamin Levy on ‘Everyone Intimate Alone Visibly’. Zuckerman earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at the Berklee College of Music where he studied Jazz theory and was taught computer music by Richard Boulanger. He continued his education at the California Institute of the Arts where he studied privately with electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick, earning a Master of Fine Arts degree in new media composition. Zuckerman has also served as a lecturer at California Institute of Arts, Berklee, and Dartmouth, on topics including composing for film and tv, traditional Chinese instrumentation, and sonic art. Jeremy is based in Los Angeles where he lives with his wife and two kids

**Emily Marshall, Music Director and Conductor**\
Emily has worked as the Associate Conductor/Keyboardist of The Who and has performed at iconic venues all over the world such as Madison Square Garden, The Hollywood Bowl, The O2, Royal Albert Hall, New Orleans Jazz Fest and many more. Heidi Joosten  is a Jeff-Award winning music director, composer, orchestrator, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and teacher. Since 2014, she has collaborated on over 125 new theatrical, comedic, and concert productions in Chicago and across the nation. Classic Albums Live (CAL) takes the greatest Classic Rock albums and recreates them live on stage—note for note, cut for cut.
 
“CAL are curators,” says founder Craig Martin, “These albums are historic and stand the test of time, and CAL honors these records and their fans by delivering performances that sound exactly like these records.”
 
To do this, CAL boasts an exceptional ensemble of performers, all of whom have graced music’s elite stages and collaborated with industry icons both in studio and on stage.

The very first track of the album lets you know that heartache awaits. It’s not easy to fall apart, then sing about it, then have 25 million people buy it. It was therapy and it paid great. This is a tough album for us to perform; the vocals are tricky. There’s nuance and layering and thunder, and the guitars are orchestral.

Plus, the vibe of the album, the feel, is hard to recreate. I wanted the band to move into an apartment together to prepare for this album, but that didn’t fly, so we rehearsed tirelessly, and we got it.

## **LETTER FROM NEIL**

The idea of a Broadway musical about my life has always been a daunting one. It wasn’t until the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease prematurely ended my touring career that I started to seriously consider the prospect. I say “prematurely” because my heart and soul would tour until the day I die if only my body would cooperate.

My friend and longtime producer Bob Gaudio had some success with his little show, Jersey Boys (perhaps you’ve heard of it?), so I went to him for some guidance on where to begin. Bob brought in Ken Davenport and together they built the incredible creative team that became, A Beautiful Noise.

When Anthony McCarten came on board, we spent hours talking. It was his idea to frame the show in the context of therapy sessions. I loved the idea and never shied away from talking about my years of psychoanalysis. There used to be a stigma around talking about mental health and thankfully through the years, it’s become an important and accepted topic of conversation.

Sitting in the theatre and watching the show has itself been therapeutic: reliving some joyful and some of the painful parts of my life, wishing perhaps that if I could only make a few edits in the script, it would change some of the reality of what I was seeing. But in the end, coming to terms with my life and accepting it has somehow come full circle. I feel fortunate and full of gratitude for all the people in my life. It is each of them who have impacted and shaped me in their own way to get me to the place where I am now…a better man. A better father. A better husband. A better songwriter.

I’d like to thank Marcia and Jaye, this story wouldn’t be possible without you. My children and grandchildren for your most important supporting roles in my life. My wife, Katie, who encouraged me to keep going through this process and finally, to Dr. Lu Katzman, my longtime therapist who inspired this story. May she rest in peace.
